Why do I write Movie Reviews?

or RAID 2 - a movie review

This weekend I watched a movie Raid 2 — a sequel of a quite successful movie Raid (2018). If I’m really honest I watched the movie just so that I could write a blog post about it later and maybe attract topical traffic. I was not really into it but I had watched the first installment and had kinda liked it so watched this one without much thought. Frankly the movie wasn’t a bad watch. I didn’t feel like writing the review though. I had actually sat through 2+ hours of the movie and gave it my full attention without feeling a thing in return. There was nothing which made me feel inspired.

This led me to inquire why I actually write movie reviews. I visited my old blog and found a review of Qala, the movie from 2022, for which words were pouring through me, I wrote with an urgency with teary eyes. In the write up the parts of the movie and parts from my own life are completely blurred. Both watching that movie and then writing about it were an exhilarating experience. This is why I write reviews.

My reviews are rarely about how the cast performed, how sound was the film technically but mostly about how it made me feel. Which parts of myself, it made me remember or discover. Interaction with any kind of content is a very unique experience, you and I would have watched the same movie but at the end we would be talking about two different stories altogether. One’s watching experience is essentially an extension of oneself.

With high speed internet and social media we are anyways consuming more content than previous generations. If I need to get entertained with brain rot I can simply scroll, and there will be new content every time. With OTTs and exposure to world cinema we know what a high quality, deeply immersive content looks like. If I choose to interact with long form content, I am certainly looking for something more than empty entertainment. I don’t think I need long form brain rot for sure. Films have the power to make you feel more, that’s why I keep coming back to it again and again. It is due to my learning from films that I have high content standards now.

I apologise to the makers for picking their film to watch as it was clearly not meant for me. I apologise to myself as well for watching a movie just for stupid motive of getting visits for the blog. Short cuts, doesn’t matter how intelligent, never lead to fulfillment. If you try to cheat life, it will cheat you back. Ironically, this is something even the film wanted to convey in the end.
